ERR - Maj. Gen. Meelis Kiili, the commander of the Estonian Defence League, is a candidate for the command of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East.
According to Kiili, the United Nations have turned to several countries with the question if they could appoint a military commander for the mission, daily Postimees reported on Tuesday.

Kiili sees Austria and Sweden as Estonia’s main competitors, but stated that the UN had also turned to Argentina, Norway, and Chile.

He pointed out that the state had asked him if he would be ready to put an application together. The UNTSO commander is chosen by Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres. The new commander will be named fairly soon, as the handover is set for July 17 this year in Jerusalem.

UNTSO was begun in the late 1940s after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Its area covers Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Egypt.
